Here is monthly Japanese class newsletter.
Please enjoy reading it.
                                                                              Ms. Hayashi

This month Grade1 students read the story “Mono no namae” and learned the names of groups.
At the unit of “Katakana no katachi”, we practiced Katakana again focused on the letters looks similar. Several students are not sure to remember katakana.I hope they will continue to persevere with practice.
Next topic was “Tegami de siraseyou”. They learned how to write a letter. And they wrote a letter with joy to their homeroom teacher, Mr. Bates. I feel they really like Mr. Bates!
And now we are reading a story called “Tanukino itogutruma”. We thought “okamisan” and “tanuki” ‘s feeling to reading comprehension. They like reading the part of the sound of the spinning wheel “キーカラカラ キークルクル”.
About kanji practice, they worked hard on it, try to get high score at the kanji test.
Please check again; on Monday they have a kanji test and before the test, on Friday they have homework for practice.

Monthly Musical Update

Dear Parents,

This month in Music Class, we have been preparing our music for Year End Performance, which will take place on Friday, June 23rd, in Kohoku Hall.  More details about the performance will be sent out in the upcoming weeks, so please keep an eye on your school email inbox.

Grade 1 students have been practicing the song Lava, from a short film by Pixar.  We are very pleased to be working with Mr. Bates and the Ukulele ASP, which will provide the accompaniment for our song.  In class we have been recording and listening to ourselves singing and talking about how the pulse changes in the song based on the mood.  We can’t wait to share our music with you!

Musically yours,

Ms. Shay

Dear Parents,

Tonight, the grade 1 class will have the weekly journal entry.  Here is the entry below.

Journal Entry #35- Hotter Temperatures, Hotter Tempers
Many of our classmates had a lot of disagreements this week out on the yard. Due to this, it seems like a good idea to review some ways to solve problems (without shouting and pouting). If you have a disagreement with a classmate, or classmates, what is a good way to solve this problem? Think hard about it, and I look forward to reading what you write.
                                                                Mr. Bates

Sincerely,

Brian Bates

Dear Parents,

Tonight, the grade 1 class will do some preliminary work for the country study project. Last week, each student chose a country that they wanted to study.  Now they will need to do the research on this country.

The grade 1 class will be given a worksheet with different questions that they will need to answer.  Tonight’s homework will require the students to use some type of internet source or have access to books with information about countries.  This could be something very new for the class, so please assist your child in necessary.  This assignment is quite big, so there will be no penalty if students are not finished by tomorrow.

Below are some links to websites that work well for kids.  These websites should help them find most of the information they need.

Times for Kids

Science Kids

Ducksters Education (A little harder to use)

Fact Monster (Also a little harder to use)

Please let me know if you have any questions regarding this assignment.

Sincerely,

Brian Bates

What did Grade 1 learn in ICT?

Hello everyone,

Here is the summary of ICT classes from the beginning of the second term.
  • Grade 1 students learned what a text and label are, and then they learned how to enter text in a text field. They were given pictures and word bank. They labeled the pictures by using the word bank.  After labeling the pictures, they filled in the blanks in some sentences that were about themselves.
  • Later on they have learned types of information. The students did a lot of practices about types of information. They learned "text, picture, sound and symbol". And then they started to learn each of them in details. Here is one screenshot of one of the practices that they did about symbols.
  • Grade 1 had lots of cross-curricular math activities during the ICT classes. They created groups on the local network and challenged their friends in 1 and 2 digit additions. Their math skills are getting better thanks to those kind of cross-curricular activities. We still work on cross curriculum activities time to time.
  • Grade 1 students practiced some programming, too. There is software called Kodable. Kodable introduces kids to the kind of logic and the concepts needed in computer programming. It starts with very easy levels and gets harder in the following levels. The first graders loved it so much!
  • Grade 1 students also learned what pictograph is and how to use it. They had several activities and practiced different types of pictographs. They also had lots of 10 fingers typing practices with Rapid Typing program.

Dear Parents,

We have just started our new unit on multiplication.  Tonight, the grade 1 class will work on the grouping principles which help frame the concept of multiplication.  They have practiced doing this kind of activity in class and should not have difficulty on tonight’s homework.

Sincerely,

Brian Bates
