JAL newsletter – June

Rainy season came. It is “ Tsu yu” in Japanese.
We learnt words related to the rainy season.
And we enjoyed singing the song titled “Amefuri Kumanoko”.

The learning focus was on season, learning words and special sounds this year.
We were able to acquire nice pronunciation skills, using many words and getting to know the Japanese culture.
And we learnt all Hiragana and Katakana.
After field trip, Students  wrote sentences about the field trip by themselves.
They could make a sentences about their impression.
They displayed good skills.

Next year’s main learning objectives are writing sentences using particles , and using      textbook.
Summer holiday’s homework is…Kotoba no workbook. (practice to letters)

Thank you for this year’s hard work !!   Have a good summer holiday.

June Japanese class JNL Newsletter

Dear Parents of Grade 1

We finally finished this academic year!
It was very hard to make a push to finish all the units from their kokugo textbook, even then I had a great time with HORIZON students!
And I am glad that I can tell every student has improved their Kokugo ability.
Students will take a Japanese file home, please look over it and praise them the result of the Japanese learning of this year.

I would like to thank you for your support and cooperation for learning Japanese.

During the summer break, all the JNL students have Japanese homework.
Please check it with your children.
I hope everyone has a nice summer break.
                                                                                   Ms. Hayashi

The Garde 1 students had a fun topic this month. One was “Kotoba o tanoshimou”, we enjoyed a tongue twister. The other one was “Kore wa nanndeshou”, thinking a quiz with a proper description.
And we read a story “Doubutsuno akacyan”, comparing a lion’s baby and zebra’s baby.

We also read “Datte Datteno obaasan” enjoyed the story of grandmother who challenged various things with a cat.
The last topic of Grade 1 was “Iikoto ippai ichinennsei”. We looked back at our school days of Grade 1 and wrote down our memorable thing. They tried to work hard to write sentences.

Monthly Update – June

Dear Parents,

Here is what Grade 1 has been doing this month.

Language Arts:
-       Writing:  This month our main focus was the book report activity.  Students had to write information about the book they chose to read.  Students also needed to write about the country they chose for the country poster project.
-       Grammar: Since June is the final month of the school year, we started to review previously studied material.  This month was a refresher for the grade 1 class.
-       Reading: Much time was spent on the book report activity, so students spent most of the time reading and preparing for the book report activity
-       Speaking: Part of the book report activity required students to give an oral presentation about their book.  Students spent extra time preparing their speech for the rest of the class.  Students also gave the country poster project presentations to the class.  In this last month, speaking was the main focus for language arts.

Maths:
-       In maths, we finished up our unit on multiplication.  Then the grade 1 class dived into our final unit on division.  Students finished the division unit and took the final test.  After this, the rest of the time was spent reviewing previously studied material.

Science:
-       In science, students completed the final unit on growing things and took the final test.  Students also continued to tend to the class plants and learned more about what it takes to help plants grow.  We also took three nature walks to different parks around the local area.  Students were able to have a hands-on experience with nature and learned more about their surrounding community.

Social Studies:
-       In social studies, we continued our country focus unit of countries represented in the grade 1 class.  During this time, students also finished the country poster project and each student gave an oral presentation about the country they chose for the assignment.

Art:
-       Art class was used to enhance different class projects. During one of the nature walks, students were required to sketch different aspects of nature.  During another nature walk, students needed to construct crayfish poles using the given class materials.

P.E.
-       In P.E. class we finished our unit on basketball and started a new unit on using a Frisbee.  Students learned how to effectively catch and throw a Frisbee

The year has now come to an end.  Students have worked hard and have learned much.  I have been thankful for the opportunity to teach this class, and I look forward to seeing them progress next school year in grade 2.

Below I have attached pictures of the class taken at the beginning of the year.  I have also attached pictures taken at the end of the year.  Please have a look and see how your child has grown throughout the grade 1 school year.

Sincerely,

Brian Bates

Dear Parents,

Since it is the last week, the weekly homework assignments have different than usual. I am doing less paper based activities and will be utilizing the Raz Kids website. Tonight, the grade 1 class will be asked to log into Raz Kids and read 4 books and take 4 quizzes.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Brian Bates

Homework for the Summer Break

Dear Parents,

At the end of the year, I usually give a large amount of work for students to complete during the summer vacation.  The work usually covers topics covered throughout the school year, and is given so that students do not forget content they have learned in the previous term.  Students will receive this work on Thursday.

Please know that students are not meant to do all the work in one week.  The assignments are meant to be spread throughout the year.  Each week, student should do one maths activity and one language arts activity.

This work will not be checked by myself or the grade 2 teacher, but is simply used as activities to help students keep their minds engaged over the summer break.  If you have family plans and this work is unnecessary, then your child will not be required to complete the assignments.

Please me know if you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Brian Bates
