March Japanese class JNL Newsletter

Dear Parents of Grade 1

Thanks to your cooperation, we were able to finish Term 2 today.
I hope everyone will have a nice spring break.

The Grade 1 JNL students have Japanese homework during spring break.
(practice kanji and journal). Please check it with your child.

Here is monthly Japanese class newsletter. Please enjoy reading it.
                                                                                         Ms.Hayashi

This month, the Grade 1 students read “Kanji no hanashi” and learned about many Kanji inspired by pictographs. It was interesting to know that many Kanji were inspired by the shape of something.
Also They read the story “Jidousha kurabe”. They read each sentence carefully, made an effort to understand the make and work of a vehicle.
The Next topic was “Katakana o kakou”. they practiced katakana hard to write it correctly. Some students haven’t remembered them completely yet. Please check it with your child when you have time.
And then, they enjoyed listening story “Manoii ryoushi” from their textbook. It is Japanese old story, they had a chance to read old tale from all over the world at the topic “Mukashibanashi ga ippai”. I hope they have a chance to read Japanese books during spring break.

                                    They enjoy reading Japanese books!

Spring Break Homework

Dear Parents,

Today was the last day of term 2 and the beginning of the Spring Break.  We have been asked by adminstrators to provide students with homework for the break.  If you have family plans and your child is not able to finish the work there will be no penalty given. The plans you make with your family are much more important than this work.  Here is a list of the assignments your child will receive.

Language Arts
-       Journal Entry 27 – Spring Break
-      Journal Entry #27- Spring Break
-      Next week is spring break!  What will you do during this holiday?  Where will you go?  Who will you go with?  Let me know all the things you plan to do.  I look forward to reading your journals.
                                                                                     Mr. Bates
-       Phonics Review: o-e, oa, ow, ai, ay phonics sounds.
-       Linking Verbs: Using ‘is’, ‘are’, ‘was’, ‘were’
-       Raz Kids:  Read one book and take one quiz each day of the break.

Maths
-       Addition and Subtraction: 1 to 100
-       Graphing Review: Bar Graphs and Carrol Diagrams

Science
-       Wind and Water Experiment. (Optional) – This activity requires extensive involvment from parents, and if you are not able to do this with your child that is fine.  This assignment is optional.  I have told students this as well.  These are two lessons on force that we were not able to cover.  They are definitely fun activities, but will take parent involvment in order to do them.

Again, if you have family activities planned for the break, please let your child know that they will not need to do these assignments.

Have a great Spring Break!

Saying Goodbye to Yechan

Dear Parents,

This week will be the last week that Yechan will be at Horizon.  He and his family will go back to Korea.  Today, Yechan brought a going away gift to each member of grade 1.  The rule is that anything given to students which can be eaten must first be brought home to check with parents, so your children should be bringing home a little bag of sweets today.  Here are some pictures of Yechan with the class.  As the week goes on, I will see if I can add more pictures of Yechan’s last week at Horizon. The grade 1 class will definitely miss Yechan, but we wish him all the best as he goes back to South Korea.

Sincerely,

Brian Bates
